R12

Owner

Maurice Kidney

Provenance

Bought by my father as a new build from Dave Rankin in 1986, she has been in the family ever since. R12 is one of the mass production boats Dave built towards the latter stages of the Rankin Boat building operation. At that stage Dave was building the hulls of up to 3 boats at a time, stacking them into each other and fitting them out afterwards when a new buyer arrived. Hence the off line centreboard casing in our boat and many of the boats of this period.

She has been well used as a family boat, with a child in a moses basket a regular feature in the bow of the boat in the early days. You wouldn’t get away with it today. Laterally the R12 has given much enjoyment in the CSC Dinghy Racing League, proving quite successful. Being overall League winner in 2019, 2021 and 2022. R12 was also honoured with Boat of the Year in 2022 by CSC – the first time a dinghy was awarded this trophy.
