Provenance

R9 is an early Bermudan rigged purpose built dinghy like R8 🔗. Declan Scott bought the boat in the mid 60’s from Dave Rankin who built her, the deal being done on the steps opposite the Customs House on Lynch’s Quay, Cobh as Dave emerged from the water. Many of the planks are composed of 3 or more sections of ply scarfed together. Perhaps the younger brother was only allowed to use off cuts! The boat was kindly lent by Declan to the Rankin Dinghy Class for the Rankin Worlds held at the RCYC in 2019 and 2024. Various plank repairs were done in 2024 and the boat revarnished and painted. Sadly, however, Declan died late that year and the family opted to sell R9. She was bought in early 2025 by Colin Barry who has commissioned new spars to go with a new set of Jeckell sails ready for the 2026 season.

Her main construction / design details are -

  • All as per R4. = Her planking was built using 3/8in Teak ply.
