R6
Owner
John Hudson
Provenance
Originally a punt, she was bought by the class as a project boat in 2018 from Frank Godsil of Kinsale through the good connections of Conor English’s family. John Hudson bought her early in the conversion cycle and had bronze chain plates fitted. She is very similarly fitted out as R14. They both had foredecks (unfortunatly R6’s was removed during conversion as it was beyond repair). Both have the alternative thwart solid knee design and full length risers to support the thwart ends. Both are built of 5/8 ply. The only difference is R6 was built as a punt and R14 was a purpose built dinghy.
Her main construction / design features are:-
- Glue lap construction in 5/8in plywood,
- Aft seat consists of 3 battens (no concave front edge).
- The thwart knees are the solid Rankin design.
- Originally there were no knees on the forward thwart as the deck took the load.
- A single riser running near full length supports each end of the thwarts.
- The Aft and main thwart are each supported by an “hourglass” shaped strut from the hog.
- Side seats have their original down stand beam to provide rigidity.
- Centreline box tied into the mast thwart added during conversion to a dinghy.
- Four bottom boards either side of the hog.
